According to The Telegraph, a $36 million dollar (30 million pounds) matchup between Wladimir Klitschko and Undefeated Anthony Joshua will take place on December 10. The expected venue is the Manchester Area but that is yet to be confirmed. A fight of this magnitude is a great sign for the growth of boxing and its value. In more of a quiet year, a major announcement such as this shows that boxing is alive and well.

Much credit goes to Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing for putting this deal together and matching one of his most prized boxers in Joshua against one of the greatest heavyweights of the last ten years in Klitschko. Hearn could of played it safe and kept Joshua undefeated as long as he could by matching him up against less opposition. Yet, Hearn has taken the risk and gave fight fans the biggest event and most competitive this year behind Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward.

This fight will also help set the market for other fights to come and hopefully leads to an increase in purses. The heavyweights have almost always gotten big money. They are the drawing power ever since big fights were promoted involving the likes of Louis, Marciano, Ali, and Tyson. It is also a treat to fans that there will be no prolonged waiting period involving extended negotiations. Klitschko was expected to fight Tyson Fury at the end of October. After Fury’s absence from the sport began and became public, promoters moved at light-speed to get this deal done. Especially compared to other fights that have either taken years to make or in the end were never made.

The Heavyweight Division is looking very bright. Klitschko still is considered king. But the young blood of Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Joseph Parker, and Andy Ruiz Jr make for a changing of regime. This December 10 will we see a crowning of the next king?
