On last week’s media conference call with Team Jacobs, head trainer Andre Rozier touched on the differences between the punching power of Daniel Jacobs compared to Gennady Golovkin. Rozier pointed out that Jacobs has one-punch knockout power and referenced the fact that Jacobs has more first-round knockout wins than Golovkin. Rozier went on to explain that Golovkin’s power does not come from one or two punches but instead of a volume of punches he uses to wear down his opponents using the Kell Brook fight as an example.
This week Team Golovkin had the chance to field questions on their media conference call. FirstClassBoxing.com asked Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez his take on Rozier’s comments regarding Jacob’s one-punch knockout power, “I agree with him 100%. The difference is the quality of opposition. [Jacobs] has never faced a Golovkin so when he has somebody throwing back at him maybe it will be different. I agree with Andre [Rozier]. Jacobs has one punch power and has knocked out more guys in the [first] round but I don’t think the fighters that he has fought are on the level that Golovkin fought but we’ll see on March 18”.
Punching power remains the biggest topic heading into March 18th. Whether Jacobs can take Golovkin’s power and can Jacobs’ power hurt Golovkin. Brook was able to box successfully in the early rounds against Golovkin but the punches had minimal effect. We are yet to see what happens with Golovkin hits in the canvas and if any of his opponents are capable of helping him get there, it’s Jacobs.
It may be nothing but mental tactics from both sides but Abel Sanchez seemed pleased with Rozier’s conclusion on his fighter’s power punching ability, “But I am glad that Andre is talking that way and hopefully Danny is doing the same thing”. Sanchez is hoping for a more fan-friendly fight and banking that Rozier and Jacobs execute the strategy to go for a knockout. Sanchez was not a fan of last Saturday’s welterweight title fight between unbeaten Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia, “Hopefully Danny [Jacobs] comes to fight so we don’t have a bore fest like we had last week”.
