Arthur Abraham (41-4, 28KOs) is set to make the third defence of his WBO super middleweight title in a rematch with Paul Smith (35-4, 20KOs) on February 21 at the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany.
The first fight was a close, competitive encounter, which I thought the champion had done just enough to get the nod from the judges, at most there was a round or two in it. Sadly the scoring was way out: two had it 117-111 and, inexplicably, Fernando Laguna had it 119-109.
Had the scoring been close the demand for a rematch wouldn’t be as great but controversy sells and Smith’s promoter Eddie Hearn has campaigned for a second crack at Abraham on the basis of the terrible scorecards.
It will be the first world title bout to be broadcast as part of Sauerland Event’s new deal with German TV station SAT1, it will be shown on Sky Sports in the UK and Hearn has confirmed several Matchroom fighters will also feature on the show.by
