First Class Boxing talks to British welterweight and ‘The Money Team’ fighter Ashley Theophane ahead of his fight with Pable Cesar Cano, on the Floyd Mayweather/Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez undercard.

By Andrew McCart

Andrew McCart: First of all thank you for taking the time to speak to us. Let’s dive right in and talk about your upcoming fight, on the Mayweather/Alvarez undercard, with tough Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano. How do you see the fight going?

Ashley Theophane: I will win. That will be the end result.

AM: Pablo Cesar Cano, like Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, is going to have huge Mexican support at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, will this affect you in any way?

AT: The fans can not fight for you. I’ve fought abroad eleven times and in five different countries. I’ve won in five different countries. It will be just another day at the office. I’m focused, I’m training hard. I’m working with the best in the business.

AM: What did you make of Cano’s performance against both Shane Mosley and Paulie Malignaggi?

AT: Cano is a very good fighter. He just falls short against when he steps up. Look at who I have beaten and who he has beaten. This fight will go how all his big fights went. With him losing!

AM: Do you feel a win over Cano would put you in amongst the top guys in the Welterweight division?

AT: I didn’t have to fight Cano. Two world ranked fighters turned down the opportunity to fight me. His name was brought up and I was happy to fight him. He has only lost to the best so a win over him will put me back in the mix.

AM: When you first started boxing, did you ever think you would be fighting on what could be the biggest night of boxing we have seen in a long time?

AT: When I started boxing this was always the goal. I’m doing what I wanted to do as a child. I started training in America two years after turning professional in the UK. I had my dreams and many people would of laughed at me but I just kept working hard. To reach your goal 99% of people have to have setbacks. Coming back and working hard proves how much you want it. In America I am respected State to State and Coast to Coast. Just recently Lou Collazo flew me to New York for sparring when he could of sparred an American instead. My name is respected out here.

AM: You have just signed a three year deal with Floyd Mayweather and Mayweather Promotions. What is it like being part of ‘The Money Team’ and being around Floyd Mayweather in the gym?

AT: Floyd is a nice guy and showed me love when I first came to his gym in 2012 during the Cotto camp. He didn’t know me but he asked about me and my career. He invited me out with the guys. I won’t have a word said against him as he always showed me love and respect. He told me he’d get me a fight. Now I’m opening the PPV card for his show. He believes in my talent and has given me an opportunity now I have to go out there and show why he signed me. We can box, we can stand and trade but there will only be one winner. All the guys are great. We are truly a family!

AM: Being part of ‘The Money Team’ you have trained and sparred with some of the best in the world, including the pound-for-pound king himself, Floyd Mayweather, do you think you can become a world Champion like Ishe Smith?

AT: Floyd Mayweather and Leonard Ellerbe believe I can be a world champion. They will get me the opportunity then its up to me to take it. Ishe Smith showed anything is possible.

AM: Are you planning on staying in the US or do you plan on fighting in the UK?

AT: I fight all over the world. I’m sure I’ll fight in Britain again. I represent Britain across the world.

AM: Who in the welterweight division would you love to face?

AT: I want to fight the best. Be it Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, I’m not really bothered.

AM: Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather takes on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. What’s your prediction for this fight?

AT: It will be an easy fight for Floyd. I won’t be shocked if he wins every round.

AM: You are flying the British flag out there in the States, would you like to give a message to your fans here in the UK and around the world?

AT: Follow me on Instagram and Twitter @AshleyTheophane. Check out my website for what I get up to in the lead up to the fight.
I appreciate all the supportive messages and I’d like to thank everyone for sending them.

AM: Thank you for taking the time to speak to us and we wish you the best of luck with your upcoming fight with Pablo Cesar Cano. FCBoxing Team.

AT: Thank you and all the best.
