Rocky Fielding’s next fight now has added significance.
The unbeaten Liverpudlian will vie for the vacant WBC International super middleweight title, which has been vacated by rival Callum Smith, who’ll feature on the bill, when he takes on his toughest test to date next week.
Fielding, 27, will contest the title against Texas’ Bryan Vera at the ECHO Arena on June 26, live on Sky Sports, just days after it was revealed that he had relinquished the WBA Inter-Continental belt.
It was thought that, after giving up the aforementioned WBA belt, the 20-fight unbeaten former Prizefighter champion would align himself with the IBF –– the governing body with which he is ranked highest.
But Rocky’s test against the 33-year-old former world title challenger will be for a green and gold bauble, rather than a red and white one.
Fielding’s clash with Vera is part of a star-studded card on which Tony Bellew will return to action against Lubos Suda in a warm-up ahead of a world title fight later in the year.
Elsewhere, there is a return for three-time world title challenger Martin Murray, who’ll debut up at super middleweight in his first fight in England since 2013.
Meanwhile, unbeaten flyweight prospect Charlie Edwards, English light welterweight champion Tommy Martin and Prizefighter winner Tom Doran will feature on the undercard, alongside Steve Wood-promoted duo Tom Farrell & Joe Tonks.
