Tonight at the Walsall Town Hall Martin Gethin was stopped in Round 7 by former world title challenger Ameth Diaz. It was always going to be a tough task for the British Lightweight champion but a slow start meant he was having to chase the action leaving himself exposed to Diaz’s right hand.
Ultimately boxing is about levels and even though Diaz was supposedly on the decline he was more than capable of handling Gethin who had his moments but they weren’t frequent enough to trouble Diaz and the crowd began to lose their voice as the fight went on
The first knockdown came in the 6th and the shot looked to have broken Gethin’s nose and he narrowly beat the count. It appeared in the corner that his trainer Dean Powell was having to persuade him to carry on asking him for “one more round”.
He did carry on but was knocked down twice in the 7th and was counted out by the referee.
On my scorecard after 6 rounds I had Diaz ahead 59-54by
