Ismael Barroso Stops Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado, Jr. In Sixth Round With Devastating Liver Shot

Ismael Barroso (20-1-2, 19 KOs) demonstrated power in both hands as he landed a devastating liver shot to stop Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado, Jr. (24-4-1, 19 KOs) in the sixth round of a scheduled 10-round super lightweight fight in the main event of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Besides dropping his opponent with a fight-finishing body punch, Barroso also landed a series of left hands to drop the Albuquerque, New Mexico native in the third round as well. The fight was a tactical battle between two southpaws, but the native of El Tigre, Venezuela was too powerful for Maldonado, Jr. to handle.

“I feel good. I knew I was going to win,” said Barroso. “I was feeling very strong going into this bout. We were looking for the body shot the entire night. And when we found the opportunity, we landed the shot and ended the fight.”

“I felt fine after the knockdown,” said Maldonado, Jr. “He had a sneaky left hand, but I recovered well. Then he set me up with the body shot, and I just couldn’t get up. I was too hesitant sometimes, and it kind of set me up for failure. I have to re-watch and assess every move and see where to go from there.”
