Being a boxing fan in Canada can suck. Not all fights are broadcasted to us (most notably Showtime) and although we have a strong following in Quebec and a good chunk of fighters from there, every time a fighter from Quebec fights we have to pay ridiculous prices to watch it on PPV.

Today I was disappointed when I found out Curtis Stevens versus David Lemieux would be on PPV for $55.00. I was hyped for this fight so I decided to rent it anyways. Two power punchers who like to go toe to toe. Let’s just say I’m glad I payed for the fight.

The fight started off better than I expected with both guys going at it from the opening bell. Lemieux and Stevens both let their hands go; throwing a barrage of power punches both to the body and the head. Stevens was landing hard but Lemieux was getting the better of the exchanges. The pace continued in the second with Lemieux getting the better and better of Stevens; Stevens covered up, looking to counter and landed some big shots on his own. Then in the third the pace slowed for a bit and Curtis Stevens began to get comfortable landing some flurries. But then Lemieux got Stevens on the ropes and landed a right followed by a beautiful left hook sending Stevens half way out of the ring and out cold. Stevens was out cold for several minutes.

David Lemieux improves to 37-3, 33 KOs while Curtis Stevens falls to 29-6, 21 KOs. It was a hell of a fight, and I understand that promoters want to maximize the amount of money made, but Canadians shouldn’t be forced to pay for these fights on PPV. People in Quebec will pay, so that is why the promoters make these fights PPV; but the rest of Canada won’t. If these fights were broadcasted on HBO Canada for free, we could gain a bigger following and help the sport in the long run in Canada. Hopefully the promoters will learn, and some of our exciting fighters like David Lemieux, Adonis Stevenson, Lucian Bute, and Jean Pascal can gain some more exposure.
