Derry Mathews will fight in his home city in the autumn.
The WBA interim champion is set to face Ismael Barroso, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky channel 437/HD 490, Virgin channel 546 and TalkTalk channel 415), in Liverpool –– with a date and venue to be confirmed –– after the Boxing Association ordered the clash, with the winner guaranteed to fight either Anthony Crolla or Darleys Pérez, who face-off for a second time in November, for the full title within 90 days of their clash.
Mathews was originally on the undercard of Terry Flanagan’s WBO lightweight title defence against mandatory challenger Diego Magdaleno, but the likeable Scouser has revealed that he will not be part of the card on October 10, which will also feature Andy Lee’s second WBO middleweight title defence against number one contender Billy Joe Saunders and a third world title contest, which is to be announced next week.
“I’m made up to be fighting back in my home city again,” said Mathews, who won the interim title at the ECHO Arena back in April.
“I was supposed to be on the Flanagan undercard in Manchester, but I was told by my manager Daniel [Kinahan] that a deal is on the table for me to fight Barroso later on in the month.”
“I’m fighting Barroso, he’s my mandatory, and no-one else,” he added.
“A date and venue will be given to me within the next fortnight and the fans will get another fight night to go to in the city.
“I know it seems like I’m treading water, but I’m not; I’m fighting Barroso to keep hold of my title and retain the mandatory position for that world title, which I eventually plan on bringing back to MGM Marbella, who are a great team and have a fantastic career plan for me.”
Further details surrounding the remainder of the card and ticket details will be revealed in due course.by
