WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Leo “Teremoto” Santa Cruz (30-0, 17 KO’s) looks to add some legitimacy to his career by squaring off against one of boxing’s former top dogs in, Mexican Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KO’s). The fight looks to be set for an August 29th date at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
This all Mexican affair will be a hot ticket in Southern California where both fighters reside. Santa Cruz-Mares has been a fight that has been talked about for a while and with both fighters being advised by Al Haymon right now it seems very likely to be officially announced.
Mares has been asking for this fight for quite some time now, the two have traded words in the media but now it seems all the talk will finally stop and we will see those two in the ring.
Santa Cruz recently has been facing a lot of deserved criticism for his subpar opposition and has been seen as the “Cab Driver Assassin” by many boxing fans and media members. He has fought former sparring partners and more recently on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard, he fought a part-time boxer who literally had two other day jobs. For some reason Santa Cruz has been the type of fighter that has had everything handed to him and an easier road to stardom than others.
Now however, Santa Cruz seems to actually want to fight recognizable fighters who aren’t too far past their prime. Though Mares may not have looked the same since his first round KO loss to Jhonny Gonzalez back in 2013, he still remains a dangerous fighter with a name.
Mares once was considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, after he won the Showtime Bantamweight tournament in 2011, many saw the sky as the limit for Mares. His undefeated run and road to stardom came crashing down when he met Jhonny Gonzalez in August of 2013. Since that KO loss, critics have been out against Mares saying that he doesn’t seem like the same dominating fighter he once was.
Boxing is a unique sport in the sense it’s always about the individual and their road to stardom. Fighters face a lot of ups and downs in their careers. There are always fighters who are labeled as the “next face” of boxing, since Mares’ loss, Santa Cruz has since replaced him as being the next Mexican superstar. This exciting match-up pits the past, present and future against each other where one fighter looks to add legitimacy to his run, while the other looks to make his return to glory.by
