Santa Cruz Relinquishes WBC Super Bantam Strap, Will Stay At Featherweight

By Elliot Foster (@FreelanceFoz)

Leo Santa Cruz has finally made a decision as to where his future lies.

The Mexican, who is the current WBA Super featherweight champion, announced that he would stay at that weight division for the foreseeable future.

Santa Cruz, 27, also confirmed while at the WBC Convention in China that he would relinquish the governing body’s super bantamweight title, which he has held since knocking out Victor Terrazas inside three rounds in August 2013.

He moved up in weight to capture the aforementioned WBA belt –– and he grabbed it after getting the better of a 12-round decision over former world ruler Abner Mares at the Staples Center in California.

Julio Ceja, who won the WBC interim super bantamweight title on the undercard of Santa Cruz-Mares in August, is now expected to be elevated to full champion following ‘El Terremoto’s’ declaration
