Smith Stops Fielding In One, Creates History With British Title Win

By Elliot Foster (@FreelanceFoz)

Callum Smith made history and claimed local bragging rights with a sensational stoppage.

The number one-rated super middleweight, who has the WBC Silver title, became the fourth of the fighting brothers to pick up the domestic crown, live on Sky Sports.

Smith went in against city rival Rocky Fielding at the ECHO Arena, with the vacant British title on the line.

And with the vociferous support for both lads as 10,000 Scousers piled into the sold-out venue to see the pair trade shots, the main event lasted just two minutes and 45 seconds.

Game plans, which were put in place by respective trainers Joe Gallagher and Oliver Harrison, went out of the window as soon as the first punch was thrown.

Smith’s head was rocked back by an early Fielding jab in the opening seconds, but it wasn’t long before Callum’s stone-cold focus and precision took over to devastating effect.

Fielding was seated inside the first 60 seconds by the first meaningful combination thrown by Smith: a left and right to the head, followed by a body shot.

Rocky, who was previously undefeated and slips to 21-1 (12), wasn’t interested in covering up, taking the loss of the opener, regrouping and going on. He fought fire with fire, began to throw back at the taller, rangier, younger Smith and paid the price massively.

He was put on his back again from an unstoppable left hook after trying to fight his way back into the contest. And though Fielding got up at eight, he was deemed unfit to continue by referee Phil Edwards.

The win for Callum Smith, at just 25, means that he becomes the fourth of four Smiths to hold the coveted Lonsdale belt and now the world is his oyster.

It was an unbelievable showing from an improving but already fantastic fighter. Devastating, if you like.
