After a truly dominant display over the legitimate 154lb world champion Saul Alvarez last Saturday the boxing world is already a buzz with who will be the next man to have a shot at the pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather.
The problem is after such an emphatic win over the heavier, stronger, younger Mexican finding an opponent worthwhile of making a successful PPV is a real challenge.
One man who deserves the fight and has the personality, an interesting back story and a crazy Father to boot is the main man at 140lbs Danny Garcia (27-0 16KO’s). The 25 year old Philadelphia native is coming off the biggest win of his career a unanimous decision victory over betting favorite Lucas Matthyse which was the chief support on Mayweathers last PPV.
He has beaten big names in the light welterweight division holds knockout victories over Amir Khan and Eric Morales and a points win over Zab Judah.
Despite fighting his career at a lower weight Garcia matches Mayweather for height and will not be over matched physically unlike his last lower weight opponent Juan Manuel Marquez. Garcia has real knockout power and is capable of hurting Floyd if he gets in a position to land which is easier said than done.
I’m not saying Garcia can match up in terms of speed or skill but he won’t be blown away and Shane Mosley has proved Floyd can be hurt it’s not an impossibility.
The main reason this fight makes sense is what the Garcia camp bring to the promotion of the PPV, Showtimes all access series is a great tool to build up a fight if the personalities involved create interest. The problem with his last two opponents Guerrero and Alvarez was they came across friendly yet dull. Both men were respectful of Floyd and provided little in the way of controversy, enter Danny Garcia’s father Angel.
This man can talk and then some, can you imagine how much trash and offensive remarks he will fit in to 4 episodes? Love him or hate him he gets people talking which is a key ingredient to hyping a fight.
Many people want Floyd to step up to middleweight which I just don’t see when he walks around at around 147lbs and he only put on a couple in his last fight. I expect his next fight to be at 147 and against a Golden Boy fighter, Garcia represents the best option available right now.
Broner, Alexander and Khan are all good tests for Mayweather in the future but the man who should get the shot in May 2014 is Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia. It makes commercial sense and money talks especially in Floyd’s world, a Khan fight may be bigger but he hasn’t done enough in the ring to justify making the fight so soon.
Who do you think should be next for Floyd Mayweather?
